Situation

Pacific Gas and Electric — the largest energy provider in the United States — runs physically demanding field work across an enormous, geographically dispersed network: confined spaces, elevated work, and conditions a lab-based assessment never sees. Managing musculoskeletal risk at that scale meant reaching work a small central ergonomics team could never get to in person.

Complication

PG&E set four concrete requirements before it would adopt an assessment method at scale: workers had to get instant feedback they could see; assessments had to work in confined spaces and on elevated work; risk had to be assessable from a safe distance; and the data had to flow through an API into a centralised ergonomic risk-management database. Most approaches met one or two. The method also had to be usable by people who weren't ergonomists.

Response

How this generalises

Coverage is the constraint most safety programs hit first: a method only one or two specialists can run will only ever assess a fraction of the work. PG&E's pattern — a field-deployable assessment that non-specialists can run, feeding a central system through an API — is how a program scales from a handful of assessments to organisation-wide coverage without diluting the method.
